In September of 1959 a group of seven men from the Downtown Arid Club got together to form “Operation Crossroads”. The committee’s goal was to raise $1500 to lease and renovate a piece of property on the far northeast corner of Phoenix, Arizona that was built by a local church in the 1940’s to house elderly single congregation members. In the 1950s it was converted to a center for drug addicts. The lease was signed in October of 1959 and by May of 1960 the group had raised $1758 through the “Buck a Month Club”. The majority of the donations were between $1 and $5 with the exception of the largest donation of $500 given by the Wholesale Beer and Liquor Association of Arizona. On September 18, 1960 the official ribbon cutting was held for Crossroads Rehabilitation Center for Male Alcoholics. The facility housed 20 men and hosted daily Alcoholic Anonymous meeting.
